Android Dominance

Google’s relatively new operating system, Android OS, has quickly become a front-runner amongst other mobile operating systems.  Less than three years after introduction, Android has become the leader of the pack, surpassing iOS, Blackberry, and Symbian.  Android has become synonymous with the idea of openness and freedom.  The entire platform is based on the Linux kernel.  Because of this, Google has built an operating system paradise for developers and die hard techies, while giving the average Joe a beautiful user experience.  Customization has greatly contributed to the success of Android, and has certainly aided in vaulting them to the top.

Many features have promoted the gaining popularity of the operating system.  Native support of Exchange Email has been the deciding factor for many businesses to abandon once top dog Blackberry and embrace Android.  There are also many variants of Android smartphones across a wide array of carriers throughout the world.  Main competitor, Apple, produces one phone, the iPhone.  This may be seen as an advantage for Apple, but I disagree.  Google has spread Android across many gadgets to create an always accessible platform.  Whether it be tablets, cell phone, home computer or even your automobile, consumers have their personal Google account with them at all times.  Email, calendars, pictures, and documents are with you every step of the way.  Android has truly created a fully integrated Google experience.

While most devices today allow you to access Google services, Android provides an absolute cohesive environment.  Everything you do is linked to your Google account, and better yet, it’s all free.  They have a unique platform that no other company can duplicate.  Google Navigation, for instance offers free spoken turn-by-turn GPS navigation that is always up to date.  No other device implements this.  Also, the Graphical User Interface is unmatched by any other.  Widgets can be placed anywhere on the home screen, and provide you with updated weather, news, social network updates, and various other content, unlike other platforms.  Constant, background backups of all your data also keeps peace of mind should the unthinkable happen to your device.

In the end, Android has built the Holy Grail of operating systems.  True openness, along with an unparalleled user interface has put Android at the top.  Given the brief existence, one can only wonder what Google will come up with next.
